Ready to eat and drink your way through American cuisines? Let me take you there today! I come from a country with so many different cultural backgrounds and the food follows right along with that. You can be on the east coast indulging in Italian pasta then scoot on down to Lousiana for some creole-type cuisine. Not far north from there is some of the best down-home Southern cooking ever in Tennessee. To the west a bit is Big Sky country where bison outnumbers the humans. Further west towards California we can enjoy fresh avocado with every dish.
Whether you’re planning a once in a lifetime journey across the good ‘ole USA or hoping to have a stay-cation, make those travel experiences complete by enjoying some incredible food and drinks throughout the country.
Here’s 9 American Cuisines to Try While Traveling:
#1: Missouri Wines
Forget the rolling vineyards in Napa Valley, head on over to midwest Missouri to try some of their award winning wines. Sip on your vino while overlooking the incredible views of the Missouri River at OakGlenn Vineyards and Winery. Don’t forget to purchase a bottle of your favorite to take back home with you!
#2: A Bowl of Gumbo in New Orleans
This location’s been on my list for a while now! I hear the French Quarter in New Orleans is overwhelmed with an amazing mix of foods and drinks unique to that region. The most requested food from the Bayou’s cuisine is Gumbo, a thick and spicy stew. Other things to try in the French Quarter is boiled crawfish, a Po-Boy submarine sandwich, the Creole dish of jambalaya and the Sicilian-inspired muffulettas. For drinks in New Orleans, you can’t leave without trying the ever-unique Sazerac, a cocktail blending rye whiskey, bitters, sugar and absinthe.
#3: Las Vegas Buffets
Vegas is one of my favorite places in the world but let’s be real, it is soooo expensive! You simply can’t go wrong with a buffet in Vegas for food options. Most times you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck meal-wise by eating at them (check your hotel for coupons too!) Most buffets are also usually open 24 hours and you can find just about any dish you’re craving. From snazzy Asian fusion restaurants to more upscale cuisines, the ability to sample whatever type of dish you’re after quickly turns Vegas into a foodie-location.
#4: Chicago Classics
Growing up near this major city, I never full indulged myself into what it had to offer. Believe it or not, Chicago’s cuisine is so much more than hot dogs and deep dish pizzas. While on a visit to the city, join in one one of the popular Famous Tastes of Chicago Food Tour for the ultimate tasting. You get to experience 6 of the Windy City’s quintessential staples from local restaurants and specialty food shops.

#5: Miami Cuban Cuisines
Are you a big fan of spicy and hot cuisine? Then head on down to Miami where you’ll find the perfect combo of Southern favorites and Cuban classics. Whether you’re indulging in a jalapeno burger or enjoying chicken and waffles for breakfast, you won’t go hungry in Miami.
#6: Tennessee Fried Chicken
Now on to some of that down home southern cooking I was talking about earlier! If fried chicken is your thing then Nashville is the place for you. Looking for some melt-in-your-mouth barbecue chicken? Then put the bluesy Beale Street of Memphis on your itinerary as well. There aren’t many more cuisines I enjoy more than that from the South!
#7: Oregon’s Original Corn Dog
The Boyington husband and wife team made a living by selling hot dogs from their vendor stand to tourists and locals. After the buns got ruined in the rain one day, the husband thought it’d be smarter to cook them as needed so he created a pancake batter to dip the dogs in. Since that time, Pronto Pup has been dominating the corn dog game since the 1930s in Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
#8: New York City Street Food
I know this will be absolutely crazy to hear from a travel blogger hailing from the USA but I’ve never been to the Big Apple! It’s been high on my list for years and I’m hoping to make it happen in the near future. Really though, I’m just ready to try the ever-famous food trucks in NYC! All too often I see Instagram shots of people munching on those mustard pretzels or chowing down on a true NYC bagel and it looks SO good.
#9: San Fran’s Clam Chowder
I may be a tad bias to recommend San Francisco as a place to go for food because, well, I live right by there! One of the top authentic Pacific dishes to try in San Fran between tourists and locals alike is the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl which can be found at many different vendor stands down near the Fisherman’s Wharf.
