I recently published a post talking about the worthy things to see while visiting Alabama Hills in California (click here if you missed it!) Truthfully, the main location that enticed me to visit Alabama Hills was the incredible Mobius Arch. While looking right through the circular formation, it provides the perfect framing to Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48. This short hike to the Mobius Arch is one of the coolest stops in the Alabama Hills area and suited for hikers of any age.
Where is the Mobius Arch?
The views within the valley west of the Sierra Nevada’s are unparalleled with most throughout the world. This area is referred to as Alabama Hills. Covering a span of 30,000 acres, its soft granite rocks are a stark contrast to the backdrop of jagged peaks. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, visitors can find the Mobius Arch trail off of Movie Flat Road in Lone Pine, California.

A Short Hike to the Mobius Arch
The trail to the Mobius Arch is simple and we can reach it about halfway through a 0.6 mile trail. In the parking area, the loop trailhead begins from the left or the right. Heading right, we can see the Heart Arch shaping up in the distance with the Inyo Mountains as a backdrop.
Continuing on through the outstanding formations and dry vegetation, we come to a split in the trail. Stay left to continue on towards the Mobius Arch.
Finding the Mobius Arch was more difficult than expected but, if you keep your eyes lasered on to Mount Whitney, you’ll be sure to see the fragile arch hanging in the air.
At first, it seems very small, almost convincingly suggesting as if this isn’t actually the Mobius Arch. To check if you’re in the right place, climb below the arch and look through it. If Mount Whitney, rising to 14,505 feet, is framed perfectly between the circular dimension, you’ve officially found the Mobius Arch.
I’m a sucker for natural formations like these, especially when I can stare up at snow-capped peaks while sitting below in the sunshine. The Mobius Arch is the perfect option for a short hike that doesn’t lack in epic views and I hope everyone can experience it at least once!
Before heading into natural areas, it’s imperative that you’re familiar with the “Leave No Trace” principles. Read More: Leave No Trace: The 7 Rules of the Backcountry. Learn more about Leave No Trace on their website here.
