I was gifted the visit to Flam & the Flam Train as a part of the Norway in a Nutshell Tour with Fjord Tours and Visit Flåm. As always, all experiences, photos, thoughts and opinions are all my own!
Having you ever been scanning the internet and found a location that looked like such a dream, you knew from that moment you had to visit? That was me the first time I saw pictures of the Flam Train journey.
Here’s A Visit to Flåm + The Flåmsbana:
Getting to Flam
Flam is located about 100 miles northeast of Bergen and about 200 miles northwest from the capital of Oslo.
From Oslo or Bergen, take a train on the NSB line or a bus ride via Nettbuss to get to Flam.
I came to Flam as a part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour. A completely customizable self-guided tour, it takes you around the dramatic snowy mountains, through UNESCO-protected fjords, and on the Flåm Railway, highlighting the best of Norway in 10 hours.

A Short Visit in Flam
As a part of the Norway in a Nutshell Tour, I arrive in Flam after a couple hours cruising along the fjords. With about an hour layover in the tiny town before embarking on the Flam Train, I get to explore the colorful village. It’s such a sight to see at the base of the snowy mountains.
Since this trip to Norway was in March, only about half of the few shops and restaurants were open. The first place I stumble upon is the Flam Museum and the Flam Sweater Shop.
After wandering around the port area, I make my way over to the Flam Bakery for a hot cup of coffee and a seat to soak in the views.
Things to Do in Flam
Since I didn’t have much time in Flam, there are definitely some things I’d love to come back to do. While it’s absolutely stunning in the winter, I’d enjoy returning in the summer to get a different vibe for the area!
- See the fjords from above at the Stegastein Viewpoint
- Stay at the historic Fretheim Hotel. 200 years ago, English Lords would stay here while sailing their yachts on the fjords.
- Visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum
- Take a FjordSafari trip in a smaller boat
- Snowshoe hike the Aurland mountains
- Eat at Norway’s only train car restaurant, the Toget Café
- Go skiing at the Myrkdalen Hotel
- Have a glass of wine while overlooking the fjords at the Lobby Bar
- Get up close and personal to Jostedalen glacier, the largest glacier in continental Europe
- Rent bicycles and ride down the Flåm Valley
Flamsbana: The Flam Train
Regarded as the most stunning train ride in the world, a ride on the Flamsbana is a must in Norway. Boarding the train can be done from the Myrdal train station or in Flam at the Sognefjord.
While the entire Flamsbana trip only takes one hour it’s seemingly not long enough for such a beautiful ride. During that time, the train elevates from sea level to nearly 2900 feet. This ascension makes the Flamsbana one of the steepest standard railway lines in the world.
Winding through 20 tunnel passages in total, the train ride is literally a dream. Picturesque Norwegian villages, painted yellow and red, dominate the hills of the countryside. The Flam makes one stop at the Kjosfossen Waterfall before ending its journey in Myrdal.
*TIP: Snag a seat on the right side of the train when boarding to get the best window views!
Returning from Myrdal
If you’re heading back to Flam from here, take the Flamsbana back the other way. Otherwise, catch a train from here back to Bergen, Voss or Oslo through the NSB website.

Since you’re from Finland I would have assumed you’d already been here! You’re so lucky to be from such a gorgeous part of our world. Definitely add Flåm and the Flåmsbana to your itinerary for Norway! It was such a sight to see but I would definitely love to go back and see it in the summertime!
