Serendipity, defined as the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. That’s exactly what I experienced on my recent visit to College Cove on the Pacific Coast. Surrounded by nature goodness here in California, I normally use Pinterest as my inspiration for where I want to explore next. That was no different on my recent trip up the coastline when I found a picture of a coastal swing overlooking the ocean. After a couple of hours moseying through the trails north of Trinidad, I never found the swing but I did find an unexpected spot for sunset.
Where is College Cove?
Nestled along the banks of the Pacific Ocean on the northern California coast is a quiet spot worthy of exploring. College Cove is actually the beach in the northern cove of Trinidad State Beach but with a more secluded feel than the latter. Most people come here to view the gorgeous free-standing Pewetole Island which separates the beaches of College Cove and Trinidad.
Entering College Cove
Because I was specifically looking for the coastal swing in College Cove, I followed a hiking route I found online. Beginning at a trailhead in a residential area off of Stagecoach Road, I mosey my way into the beautifully-lush forest. It’s not long before golden hour takes hold, displaying the most gorgeous rays of gold through the Sitka spruce trees.
If you’re looking to access the College Cove beach without hiking as far as I did, an easier entrance can be found via the Trinidad Head parking area. A set of somewhat-broken steps lead down to the beach so be careful when accessing!
It’s also important to note that College Cove is essentially split into 2 or 3 separate beaches when the tide rolls in. Be aware of how high the water is while you’re down here exploring so you don’t get stuck.
Hiking Through College Cove
In hopes of finding that coastal swing, I visited College Cove twice. In the end, I found the tree where the swing was previously but it’s since been taken down. A tad disappointed by the loss of seeing it, I decide a short hike through the vegetation will do instead.
Unable to see through the thick trees, the unmaintained trails begin losing elevation quickly. After a couple of minutes descending downwards, the bushes open up to the most gorgeous sight.
Reaching College Cove Beach
Taking a few steps down into the muddy trenches of the beach, this sandy oasis of hazy coastline appears. A sea cave to the left creates a small tide pool as the water rises up on the shoreline. Those rocky isles, like Pewetole Island, with trees sitting atop were the type of views I was craving without even knowing it.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, there’s an actual trailhead that comes down to this beach. Apparently I took the hard way coming from the south. Since it was later in the day, the tide was beginning to roll in. Because of that, had I come from the actual trail I would’ve been unable to reach this spot.
Serendipity, finding something good without even looking for it.
A Serendipitous Sunset at College Cove Beach
Serendipity was what I got to experience stumbling upon this beach for sunset. I was looking for something specific and ended up discovering one of the best spots I’ve ever sat in for sunset.
As those colors begin transforming, I prop myself up on the only seat available, an old driftwood log.
The vibrant rainbow effect of the sky grew more vivid with each moment that passes, almost like it was intentionally putting on a show for me. Maybe it knew I needed this moment? After missing what I came for, the universe was telling me that the best things happen when we least expect it.
Now I can’t wait to come back here again.
