Have you ever been to the tippy-top of a mountain? If not, hold on to your seats because I’m about to take you there. Nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, Zugspitze is the highest peak in all of Germany. At the top, you can experience a complete 360° view of over 400 snow-capped peaks from surrounding Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
Here’s Deutschland’s Highest Peak—Zugspitze:
Getting to the Top of Zugspitze
To get up to the peak of Zugspitze, it requires a train ride that takes about an hour and a half. The most convenient itinerary is to park at Eibsee Lake and ascend with the cogwheel train that leaves about every half hour. If you’re unable to drive to the starting point at Eibsee Lake, trains run daily from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the entrance of Zugspitze.
Prices for a complete round-trip ascension and descension to Zugspitze is 56 Euro per adult, 41€ for teens or 32€ for children. Check current prices here.
At the time we visited, there was an Eibsee cable car to use but, as of 2017, it is decommissioned. The new Zugspitze cable car now hoists you directly up the mountainside, cutting the travel time to the peak in half. On the ascension, catch some amazing views of Lake Eibsee.
Reaching the Top of Zugspitze
A set of stairs greets you once arriving at the top. You’re prompted to take a walk through the cafe. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while gazing out at the snowy peaks through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Once you’ve warmed head, head on out into the snow to experience the peak of Zugspitze. Some fun activities at the top of Zugspitze include embarking on a glacial hike, tobogganing and skiing. Grab a bite to eat at the Sonnalpin Glacier Restaurant and the Glaciergarden.
Rising Up to the Summit of Zugspitze
Not high enough yet? Go back into the cafe to find the cable car that will take you to the very top of the peak. Because of the cold and thin air, we didn’t stay up here long but it was definitely a cool experience.
This was actually the first I had ever been up to this high of elevation without being in an airplane! I would do it over and over again if I could.
